TAA Papua New Guinea Sunbird Services VH-SBV

Aerosoft Catalina

Built in Canada for the USAAF as 44-34081, after it was civilianized it was purchased by Macao Air Transport and registered as VR-HDH, in 1962 it became VH-SBV when Trans Australia Airlines purchased it for operations in Papua New Guinea as a part of their Sunbird Services, the aircraft flew regular services around coasts of New Guinea from 1962-1966 when competition from land based aircraft began to eat into the overall profitability of the service, upon retirement it was meant to go into a local New Guinea museum but unfortunately it was left to rot for some years, the remains were purchased in 1979 by a New Zealand based group, and is currently undergoing restoration as a static display.
